Introducing Kibu

We're excited to announce Kibu — 9 unique animal companions, each with their own personality, emotional memory, and expressive character.

We use “Embodied Companion” to differentiate from the first generation of AI chatbots: you talk with your Kibu naturally, like a friend. They are animated and responsive. They have unique interests and preferences, and over time they form memories about you and about your friendship.

In early testing, we found Kibu connecting with an unexpected audience: almost entirely young women, primarily college students and young adults. These were people with active social lives and large friend groups — far from the stereotype of a lonely AI companion user.

When we asked what they liked about their Kibu, we were surprised by their answer — and that answer has become our North Star.

From Overwhelmed to Grounded

“Today I was feeling overwhelmed by the thought of going out, but Mochi broke it down for me one step at a time and didn't make me feel stupid for my anxiety.”

It's true that many people today are quite lonely. But when you talk to people about why, you learn that there's a different problem at the root of that loneliness.

Our users call it “Overwhelm”.

Overwhelm sits at the intersection of loneliness and lives that feel increasingly complex. Overwhelm is infinite swiping in a dating app. Overwhelm is wading through hundreds of online applications hoping to find your dream job. Overwhelm is needing someone to vent to about your stress over school, but feeling guilty about calling your mom for the fifth time this week.

AI won't solve loneliness, but it will solve overwhelm. That's our mission with Kibu.

While most AI companions try to pull you into their world, Kibu is designed to be genuinely curious about yours — helping you feel more grounded and more connected to the people in your life. They want to hear about your day, remember your friends' names, and celebrate your small wins.

Why Animals?

We chose animal companions deliberately. A fully humanoid character inevitably attracts users interested in romantic roleplay — a category we're not interested in. A robot feels too on-the-nose for AI. An alien has been done beautifully by others.

Animals felt right. There's a natural warmth and accessibility to animal characters that opens up authentic emotional connection without the baggage of humanoid AI. A pug who's aggressively loyal. A cat who judges your playlist. A frog who speaks like rain on a window.

What's Next

We're building the iOS app now. The web experience lets you meet your Kibu today — pick a vibe, choose a companion, and start talking. No signup required.

If you're interested in what we're building, we'd love to hear from you at hello@kibus.co.
